Effective Business Writing
This intensive one-day workshop is aimed at people who wish to develop their business writing skills. It is assumed that the participants have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word or another word processor.
The workshop is divided into four sections as follows:
Understanding the Importance of Written Communication in Business
This part of the workshop introduces the participants to following key topics:
- Understanding the flow of information in an organisation and the role that written documents have in this process
- Appreciation of the challenges of communication through the written medium.
Four-Stage Writing Process
This second part of the workshop (typically mid-morning) introduces the participants to a four-stage writing process covering:
- Understanding your reader
- Identifying the key points
- Creating your first draft
- Final polish.
Improving the Readability of Your Writing
This section covers techniques to polish your writing. Key topics include:
- Shortening sentences
- Shortening paragraphs
- Using online resources to assess readability.
Written Communication Techniques for Short Documents
The final section of the workshop concentrates on the special requirements of short written communication - emails and memos. Key topics include:
- Being brief and concise
- Maintaining clarity
- Keeping to the point.
Participants are supplied with a comprehensive training manual which covers all topics featured in the workshop.
